The family relocated to New York City’s Queens borough’s Flushing neighbourhood in 1961, then to Douglaston in 1963.

When McEnroe was eight years old, he began playing tennis in the neighbourhood Douglaston Club. His parents registered him in the Eastern Lawn Tennis Association when he was nine, and he immediately began competing in local competitions. 

At age twelve, when he was rated seventh in his age group, he attended the Port Washington Tennis Academy on Long Island, New York. He subsequently started participating in national junior competitions. McEnroe graduated in 1977 from the Manhattan-based Trinity School.

When did John McEnroe come into lime light?

McEnroe won the mixed doubles and junior singles championships at the French Open in 1977 as an amateur player age 18 teaming with Mary Carillo in the former. 

Later, McEnroe advanced through Wimbledon’s singles qualifying round and into the main draw, where he was defeated in the semifinals by Jimmy Connors in four sets. 

It set a record for an amateur in the Open era and was the best qualifying effort by a man at any major.

McEnroe attended Stanford University after being recruited by coach Dick Gould. In 1978, he helped Stanford’s team win the NCAA singles championship in addition to being recruited by Stanford. He joined the ATP circuit after that year and inked his first sponsorship contract with Sergio Tacchini. 

He lost against Connors once more in the semifinals of a major, this time the US Open. After that, he continued to win championships, including his first Masters Grand Prix, when he defeated Arthur Ashe in straight sets, as well as Grand Prix competitions in Stockholm and Wembley. 

He was able to finish the year as the fourth-ranked player in the world thanks to his late-season success.
